Delores has started teaching me Spanish.
She is a wonderful older woman (the mother of my aunt) who we have all nicknamed Ya Ya. She speaks very little English, but we manage to communicate anyway. The kids also translate between English and Spanish when we really can’t get a point across.
Anyway, she is teaching me Spanish a little every day. I know a lot from songs, believe it or not, because I listen to songs with Spanish in them. (Devendra Banhart, Nat King Cole, etc…) I just didn’t ever quite know what was being said. I could draw conclusions, but not completely.
Anyway… she taught me the English meaning of most Nat King Cole’s version of Quizas, Quizas, Quizas as a warm up, which pleased me.
Then she taught me:
- Que es eso?
- Eso es…
- Queiro un…
- Queiro un vaso de agua.
- Queiro un poquito…
- Queiro un mucho…
And that’s it so far… but I’m really happy about it. :) Makin’ progress, people!
